Newcastle Crematorium, Beresfield was officially opened on Saturday 18th of July 1936 by by the Assistant Minister (Mr. J. B. Shand. M.L.A.). The construction was undertaken by Cremations Newcastle Ltd. & said to have cost upwards of £12,000 It was believed to be one of the grandest in the state with its Queensland maple fittings & beautiful Jarrah floors. The tower stands 50ft. high, set amongst 25 acres of trees, gardens and lawns. Mr Frank H. Slapp was the first person to be cremated there.
